One of the most underrated surf accessories
Any cold-water surfer knows - the worst part about surfing in the winter isn't the temperature of the water...it's getting changed before and after a surf session.
A surf poncho is a must-have for these cold-weather situations.
Just to be upfront - the mystical Ho himself sent me a pair of these to give a review.
And honestly, I don't know why I've never purchased one before.
I don’t see many people wearing surf ponchos in the US, however, in Europe and Morocco they’re absolutely everywhere. I think in the US the surf poncho has quite a stigma of being kooky probably because we’re all way too cool surf brahs to wear one, right?
Welp - after years of losing my towel and having my nipples exposed to frostbite during snowstorm surfs - I won’t ever be leaving home again without a surf poncho.
…honestly I’m picking this thing up before a bar of wax.
Surf ponchos are the most practical solution to changing in and out of your wetsuit in the winter months.
...not to mention I’ve definitely thrown one on after the shower and passed out in bed totally zonked from a heavy sesh.
Firstly - not giving a f*ck. I mean you could completely not give a f*ck - but I’d advise against going full monty in front of the surf spot next to your old kindergarten. It’s more like luxury hotel bathrobe not giving a f*ck.
Second - it buys you precious seconds from the wind. What really sucks about changing while being wet is the wind hitting that layer of water on your body and nearly turning it to ice. The surf poncho cuts that out a bit and makes you hate life less for that 10 minutes you try to put on or take off your straight jacket in winter.
Third - style. I mean Obi-Wan, a prince from Dubai, etc. - you pretty much look like a straight baller.
Bonus points: It doubles as a towel, handkerchief, hand-warmer, lunch-bib, long jacket, and much more.
Welp - I hope I’ve convinced you the surf poncho is worth a serious look. It’s not expensive and super functional.
And if you’re sold on my analysis - go pick one up from Ho Stevie - they’re doooope. I also picked up a Ho Stevie surfboard sock and wetsuit changing mat...
